The video version of Jay Shetty’s popular motivational podcast “On Purpose” has moved exclusively to Netflix and Spotify, making him the latest big-name podcaster to land a lucrative distribution deal.
Spotify, Netflix and Shetty announced a new partnership Wednesday to bring “On Purpose” to video on both services. Terms were not disclosed. A person familiar with the deal told Variety that the multi-year deal is worth about $100 million, with three other companies bidding in the nine-figure range for the rights to “On Purpose.”
The new deal comes after Shetty and On Purpose’s former partner iHeartMedia parted ways after three years with the iHeartPodcast Network. iHeartMedia had sought a four-year renewal of the distribution and sales contract for “On Purpose With Jay Shetty,” but ultimately the two parties were unable to agree on terms.
Shetty’s “On Purpose” video episode will be available on Spotify and Netflix starting July 13, representing an unusual co-exclusive partnership between the two streamers. At that point, full-length video episodes of the show will no longer be published on YouTube. Spotify users can also listen to the audio-only version (still available on Apple Podcasts and other platforms). Under the agreement, Spotify will act as the global advertising sales agent for the show.
Shetty, a best-selling author and entrepreneur, launched ‘On Purpose’ in 2019. To date, we have released over 800 episodes. The show features Shetty’s in-depth conversations with some of the biggest names in the world of entertainment, wellness, and personal growth.
Shetty was already doing business with Netflix. His recently launched Perfect Strangers Media produces movies, TV and podcasts about connection, and has landed two projects for Netflix (one scripted series and one unscripted series).
Shetty called the new deal with Netflix and Spotify “a historic moment, not just for On Purpose, but for podcasting itself.”
“We are entering a new era in which interviews will have as much influence on culture on the world stage as film, music and television,” he said in a statement. “Being able to partner with Netflix and Spotify at the same time is truly a dream come true. When I started my podcast just seven years ago, I never imagined this would happen. Doing business with two of the most influential forces in global entertainment is unprecedented, and I couldn’t be more energized for what’s ahead.”
“‘On Purpose’ has built one of the most engaged podcast audiences in the world, and we’re excited to expand our partnership with Netflix and Jay by bringing video episodes to Spotify,” Roman Versenmuller, vice president, global head of podcasts at Spotify, said in a statement. “Spotify is already the place where millions of fans come to listen to shows, and this next chapter builds on that momentum by giving viewers an even more immersive way to experience it. This partnership also reflects our continued investment in video and our commitment to helping creators grow their global franchises on Spotify.”
“Jay Shetty has an uncanny ability to evoke deep, meaningful connections that resonate with millions of people around the world,” said Lauren Smith, Vice President of Content Licensing and Programming Strategy at Netflix. “By partnering with Spotify, we’re giving ‘On Purpose’ a vast new canvas, bringing visually captivating interviews to our members’ screens with must-see episodes to look forward to each week.”
