Anne Hathaway battled a secret medical condition for 10 years before finally undergoing surgery.
During an appearance on The New York Times’ podcast Popcast, the 43-year-old “The Devil Wears Prada 2” actress revealed that she had been “legally blind” in one eye throughout her 30s due to early-onset cataracts.
“This may be too much information,” she began. “I’ve been half-blind for 10 years.”
“It affected my vision so much that I basically went legally blind in my left eye and ended up having surgery,” she continued. “And I didn’t realize how bad it was until I finally started seeing the whole spectrum.”
“I’ve calmed down since then,” Hathaway added. “I didn’t know it was actually taxing the nervous system.”
According to the Mayo Clinic, cataracts are clouding of the eye’s crystalline lens.
“For people with cataracts, seeing through a cloudy lens is often like looking through a frosted or foggy window. When cataracts cloud your vision, it can make it difficult to read, drive at night, or see a friend’s facial expressions.”
Hathaway said the current vision is “a miracle.”
“I’m grateful for my vision because literally every day I wake up and feel like I can see myself. It’s a miracle,” the actress continued. “I actually think, ‘Oh, two generations ago, someone like me wouldn’t have had that option.'” So I actually feel very connected to that kind of miracle. ”
Just recently, Hathaway hit back at plastic surgery rumors circulating online, despite her “preference” to “never comment” and “not draw attention to herself.”
“We’re in an era where people are very confident in assuming that what they think is true, and sometimes they’re right and sometimes they’re not,” Hathaway said.
“There’s been so much speculation that I feel like I need to come out with my truth,” she continued. “And I’ll probably always wonder, ‘Should I have posted that? Should I not have posted that? Should I have just kept going and done things that made me happy and made me feel more confident on the red carpet?’ But I felt like the conversation was getting more and more scattered.”
“Also, by the way, these are major medical decisions that people are assuming,” she added. “No, I didn’t make any major medical decisions. I just wanted to show you that it’s two braids.”
Then she confessed: “By the way, the other thing about this is that I might also get a facelift someday.”
