“War never changes” is the defining line of the “Fallout” series. Amazon hopes that applies to the Emmys as well.

Amazon is aiming for even greater heights with Season 2 of “Fallout,” and exclusively revealed to Variety its extensive Emmy nomination strategy, including Aaron Moten’s move from supporting role to leading drama actor race.

Since its debut in 2024, the post-apocalyptic drama has become one of the breakout genre success stories in television. In its first season, “Fallout” earned 17 Emmy nominations and won Creative Arts Emmy Awards for Outstanding Musical Direction and Outstanding Emerging Media Programming for “Fallout: Vault 33.”

“Fallout” is based on the long-running video game series created by Tim Kaine and Leonard Boyarsky and developed for television by Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson Dworet. Set more than 200 years after civilization was wiped out by a nuclear apocalypse, the series blends dystopian spectacle, dark comedy, and emotional character drama, a combination that makes it one of the most acclaimed video game adaptations of all time.

Season 2, which premiered in December 2025, expands on the show’s mythology and focuses on Maximus of Morten, a squire of the Brotherhood of Steel whose moral evolution has become one of the series’ defining elements. Moten competed as a Supporting Drama Actor nominee during the Season 1 campaign, but was ultimately not nominated.

Three-time Emmy nominee Walton Goggins (lead drama actor in 2024’s Fallout, supporting drama actor in 2011’s Justified and 2025’s The White Lotus), whose performance as Ghoul quickly became a fan favorite, will star alongside Morten. Ella Purnell returns to the lead drama actress race as Lucy MacLean, an optimistic vault dweller navigating a cruel wasteland.

The global cast roster continues to expand.

Supporting drama actors include Moises Arias, Kyle MacLachlan, Justin Theroux, Zelia Mendez-Jones, and Johnny Pemberton. Additionally, Frances Turner, Annabelle O’Hagan and Leslie Uggams will compete in the supporting drama actress category.

There are plenty of guest slots available, with Kumail Nanjiani, Macaulay Culkin, Michael Emerson, and Ron Perlman vying for guest drama actor roles, while Dale Dickey and Sarita Chaudhry seek love as guest drama actresses.

Notably, Amazon focuses on large-scale craft campaigns that reflect the scope and ambition of their production. Directors Liz Friedlander and Lisa Joy will be voted on to direct the episodes “The Wrangler” and “The Other Player,” respectively. Wagner and Robertson-Dworet have been asked to write the script for the season 2 premiere, “The Innovator.”

Since its release, Fallout has become one of Amazon MGM Studios’ signature genre titles, helping to solidify the streamer’s expanding footprint in the sci-fi space. The series was renewed for a third season several months before the second season’s debut, demonstrating long-term faith in the franchise’s awards and audience potential.

As recent ratings for HBO Max’s “The Last of Us,” Apple TV’s “Severance” and Disney’s “Andor” show, Emmy voters are becoming increasingly receptive to genre storytelling, and “Fallout” could be a dark horse for the streamer.

Emmy nomination round voting will be held from June 11th to June 22nd, and the official nominations for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards will be announced on July 8th.
