This Sunday marks Savannah Guthrie’s first Mother’s Day without her mother, Nancy Guthrie, who has been missing since February 1st.
And in honor of the 84-year-old, Savannah wore a special collar for Monday morning’s “Today Show.”
To start this week, Savannah stepped out at Studio 1A wearing a bright yellow long-sleeved shirt paired with a yellow, green, black, and white plaid midi skirt. She layered the look with necklaces, bracelets, and rings.
There was no specific mention of the clothing choice, but yellow was the color that symbolized the search for the Guthrie family over the past three and a half months.
“When something happened to me and my family, NBC stopped everything and said, ‘We’ll wait,'” said Savannah, who also announced that she would start hosting a new Wardle game show, executive produced by Jimmy Fallon.
Shortly after Nancy disappeared, Arizona residents began leaving yellow flowers and ribbons in her neighborhood.
Back in February, a neighbor in Arizona explained to People magazine that “yellow ribbons represent feelings of hope and support after someone goes missing.”
According to the National Museum of American Diplomacy, the symbol dates back to 1979.
When 52 U.S. diplomats were held hostage in Iran, one of the diplomats’ wives implored citizens to hold up yellow ribbons as a sign of support, and the song “Tie a Yellow Ribbon on the Ole Oak Tree” was born.
Additionally, on February 18th, Hoda Kotb expressed his thoughts to the NBC family while filling in for Savannah during her extended absence.
This isn’t the first time Savannah has incorporated yellow into her wardrobe to send a silent message of love to her missing mother.
For her first day back as an anchor on April 6, she chose a bright yellow lace Elie Tahari dress, which she accessorized with a gold clip chain necklace and yellow heart pendant.
On Sunday, she posted a touching Mother’s Day tribute on Instagram, writing, “I miss you with every breath. We will never stop searching for you. We will never have peace until we find you.”
