Wizards of the Coast, the maker of Magic: The Gathering, announced several new card sets Friday on the first day of MagicCon 2026 in Las Vegas, including collaborations with Marvel and J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.
The Magic: The Gathering – Marvel Super Heroes set, the latest in a long-running partnership between Marvel and Hasbro-owned Wizards, will debut on June 26 and bring together “iconic characters from the Marvel Universe, from legendary heroes to world-threatening villains, reimagined through Magic gameplay.”
MCU star Paul Bettany, who plays The Vision in modern Marvel movies, took to the Magicon stage to unveil the Mind Stone, a new card that “represents the next chapter in the journey of Magic: The Gathering | Marvel Super Heroes.” Bettany also had the honor of adding the Mind Stone Gem to the real-life Infinity Gauntlet designed by East Continental Gems for Marvel.
The Hobbit set, which will be released on August 14, will include cards “from the time-honored tale that blend rich storytelling and strategic play as players adventure alongside familiar friends and formidable foes,” including the gleaming golden Smaug, the epic headliner card, the classic Middle-earth Artist card, and the Dwarf Language card.
According to the set’s description, “Join Bilbo Baggins on a journey from the Shire to the Lonely Mountain in a set that captures the whimsy and heart of one of fantasy’s most beloved adventures. Players encounter trolls, devise mysteries in the dark, and come face to face with Smaug himself. Brought to life by Magic gameplay and design.”
The Marvel and “Hobbit” sets are part of Magic’s “Universes Beyond” collection, which adds third-party IP to popular tabletop trading card games.
It also teased MTG’s upcoming “Reality Fracture” set (“an epic conclusion to the arc that began three years ago in Wilds of Eldraine”), which will be released on October 2nd. A brand new trading card game just released called “Mood Swings” developed by Magic head designer Mark Rosewater. And a new cat-themed “Secret Lair” drop will debut on June 15th.
