NBC host Sarah Gore has been diagnosed with breast cancer and will be taking a break from hosting “Open House” and “New York Live” to undergo treatment.
“I thought it was the right thing to tell myself. I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and I’m going to retire for treatment and surgery,” Gore, 49, said Thursday on “New York Live.”
“I’d be lying if I didn’t say it was a little scary.”
Mr Gore explained that his mother and sister had also been diagnosed with the disease, so he “assumed” he would be diagnosed with the same thing one day. But she wasn’t ready for that day to come.
“I always knew I was high risk. I always knew this day would come. But let me tell you, I’m not ready yet,” she explained, adding that she felt “caught off guard” by the news.
“For some reason, you’re not ready. Even if you catch it early because you’re doing everything right, it still takes a mental toll.”
The “Open House” star emotionally added, “I wasn’t prepared for it. It really surprised me. It really hurt my heart.”
“I know it’s going to sting for a little while, you know? It’s stinging right now,” she admitted. “But I also know that I’m right where I’m supposed to be. And I’m surrounded by amazing doctors and people who are taking very good care of me at home. Thank you.”
She went on to thank her “family” at work, adding that she feels “loved” and “very supported” by her co-workers.
Despite the negative news, Gore remained optimistic, telling viewers he was “decided to believe” that “maybe there is a gift in this.”
“I’m working on that part, even though I don’t fully understand what it is yet. If anything, it’s already become a precious reminder of how precious life is and how important it is to focus on what really matters,” she said.
“I’m going to come back better than ever, and I’ll see you on the other side of this,” Gore concluded. “Thank you for everything you’ve done.”
