Nick Reiner appeared briefly in court Wednesday morning in a murder case involving the deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michelle Reiner.
Reiner, wearing a yellow prison smock, spoke only when asked whether he would waive the preliminary hearing deadline.
“Oh, yeah,” he said.
His next court appearance will be on September 15th.
Reiner pleaded not guilty in February to two counts of first-degree murder. He is being held without bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown Los Angeles.
At the court hearing, his public defender, Kimberly Green, said she expected to receive additional discovery materials from prosecutors soon. Prosecutor Jonathan Chan said the autopsy report was not yet complete and would be handed over to the defense as soon as it was available.
Last Friday, his younger brother Jake posted a touching tribute to his parents on Substack.
“This is truly a living nightmare for me,” Jake Reiner wrote.
Nick Reiner was arrested on December 14th after his parents were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood home. He has long struggled with drug addiction and mental health issues, and it remains to be seen how that will play out in this case.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said Reiner could face the death penalty, but a decision has not yet been made on the issue. Mr. Hochman overturned a moratorium on executions imposed by his predecessor.
