Jake Reiner broke his silence on Friday about the tragic deaths of his parents Rob and Michelle Reiner.

In an essay for Substack, Jake recalled the moment he learned his parents had died on the afternoon of December 14, 2025.

“I was at Union Station to celebrate the life of one of my best friends, Christian Anderson, who passed away in October,” Jake wrote. “Just then, my sister Romy called me to tell me that my father had passed away. A few minutes later, she called me back and told me that my mother had also passed away.”

Jake continued, “The 45-minute Lyft ride from Downtown to the Westside was unbearable. My world as I knew it fell apart. I was in a trance. The only thing I could focus on was that I had to go to my childhood home. I had to go to my sister. I had to figure out what the hell was going on.”

“This is my story,” the 34-year-old declared, promising that his sister Romy, 28, would “tell her story in her own way, in her own time.”

Jake said he felt “so much was taken away” by losing his parents, adding that the tragedy “shattered and enraged me at the same time.”

“Nothing can prepare you for the feeling of losing both of your parents at the same time, in an instant,” Jake continued. “It’s too shocking to understand. I still have to wake up every morning and tell myself, no, this is not a dream. This is truly a living nightmare for me.”

Rob and Michelle were tragically murdered in their Los Angeles home in the Brentwood area on December 14th. They were 78 and 70 years old, respectively.

The couple’s youngest son, Nick (32), was arrested as the main suspect in the murder. He was charged with two separate counts of first-degree murder and is currently being held at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles. He pleaded not guilty at a court hearing in February.

In his essay, Jake said he couldn’t help but think “how scary it must have been” when his parents were killed, and that the couple “were the last people in the world who deserved what happened to them.”

Regarding the legendary director and Michelle, who married in 1989, he added: “They should grow old together, enjoying the rest of their lives in peace.” “Rather, it was taken away from them, from me, from Romy, and there was nothing we could do about it.”

Later in the essay, Jake called his parents’ murders “horrible” and said that every day since has been “horrifying.”

He eventually mentioned Nick, saying his brother was “at the center” of the tragedy.

“We lost over half our family that night in the most violent way imaginable,” Jake wrote. “It’s almost impossible to process.”

Jake acknowledged that “people have questions” about Rob and Michelle’s deaths and promised that “some of those answers will come in time.”

“But some of this is just for our family,” he continued. “…and keeping them private is the only way to protect what little remains of what was taken from us.”

Jake explained on Instagram that he shared the essay a week before his “first birthday without my parents.”

“I consider myself lucky to have had them by my side for the past 34 years,” he added, imploring his followers to read the full essay.

Jake and Romy first addressed Rob and Michelle’s horrific deaths in a heartbreaking statement to Page Six on December 17th, but they made no mention of Nick.

“Words cannot even describe the unimaginable pain that we are experiencing every moment of the day,” the brother and sister said.

“The horrifying and devastating loss of our parents, Rob Reiner and Michelle Reiner, is something no one should ever have to experience.”

They also asked for “respect and privacy” as they privately grieve the death of their parents.

Jake and Romy have kept a low profile since the tragedy.

They did not attend Nick’s Feb. 23 court hearing. There, Reiner’s youngest son pleaded not guilty to murder.

Nick struggled with drug addiction for years and was in and out of rehab facilities. The “Being Charlie” writer was diagnosed with schizophrenia before his parents died.

His next court appearance is scheduled for April 29th.
