Shortly after Selena Gomez was spotted in the audience at the opening night of her former Disney Channel co-star and friend Demi Lovato’s It’s Not That Deep Tour in Orlando, Florida, Gomez admitted she was there and shared a series of photos of herself, including one in which she posed with Lovato backstage.
“I’m in tears. @ddlovato – this was definitely one of the best shows ever. Oh and the vocals? Ugh, I was surprised*,” Gomez wrote on one Instagram Story. She also posted a red heart emoji over a photo of them together.
Lovato later reposted Gomez’s Instagram Story, writing, “🥹🥹Thank you so much for coming!! It was great to meet you🤍.”
However, the two stars’ Instagram activities are not limited to posting. Fans also noticed that Lovato and Gomez were secretly refollowing each other on Instagram.
Gomez and Lovato were very close during their Disney Channel days and even recorded vlogs on YouTube. (The two first met while appearing on Bernie, and Gomez told ELLE in 2018, “I love her. I’ve known her since I was 7 years old.”) The two were last photographed together at the InStyle Awards in October 2017.
In 2020, Lovato told Harper’s Bazaar that the two are no longer friends. Gomez posted a message of support for Lovato on her Instagram Story following her performance of “Anyone” at the 2020 Grammy Awards. Lovato originally recorded the song days before her overdose in July 2018.
“I wish I had the words to describe how beautiful, emotional, and well-deserved this moment was,” Gomez wrote. “Demi, I’m so happy for you. Thank you for your bravery and bravery.”
Lovato was surprised by the compliment, telling the magazine, “When you grow up with someone, you always have a love for them. But I’m not friends with her, so I felt that way…” but she/they stopped there and said instead, “I will always have a love for her and I wish everyone nothing but the best.”
But in September, Lovato hinted that things were warmer when she discussed Gomez’s new album, I Said I Love You First, on Watch What Happens Live.
“I listened to the album and it was really great,” Lovato said. “I loved the songs on it. ‘Bluest Flame’ was my song.” (They included it on their tour’s pre-show playlist last night.) She/they also talked about Gomez and Benny Blanco’s impending wedding at the time, saying, “I couldn’t be happier. She’s engaged. We wish her all the best.”
