“Please, peas, please” don’t interrupt her.
Sabrina Carpenter had to silence a yodeling fan during her first Coachella headlining set in Indio, California, on Friday night.
According to a video of the incident uploaded to
The “Espresso” hitmaker expressed disgust at the unwanted squeal after a fan explained that yodeling is “part of[their]culture” and a “call to celebration”.
“Yodeling, is that your culture?” Carpenter said from behind the piano, just before continuing his set. “Is this Burning Man? What’s going on? This is weird.”
But after the “Manchild” pop star finished his Coachella set, fans rushed to social media to debate whether Carpenter’s response was appropriate.
“The way Sabrina bravely decided to remain ignorant even after Yodel’s existence was revealed is part of her culture and says a lot about her,” one disappointed fan tweeted.
“Did Sabrina Carpenter call that girl’s culture weird and creepy?” another added.
But other fans came to the “Please Please Please Please” singer’s defense amidst the yodel fiasco.
“I obviously couldn’t hear the girl,” one person explained. “You have to remember that she’s on stage the whole time.”
“Please don’t let this happen. She really couldn’t hear what was going on and didn’t mean to offend anyone!” another added. “She had a lot going on right now.”
A representative for Carpenter did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.
Beyond his interactions with yodeling fans, Carpenter drew attention to the Hollywood and Broadway theaters he took to the Coachella stage Friday night.
“Thelma & Louise” star Susan Sarandon made a surprise appearance during the “Taste” singer’s eventful set, and Carpenter joked about headlining America’s biggest music festival.
“I can’t believe I’m headlining Coachella!” she exclaimed early in her performance. “I mean, I can do a little bit, but it’s better if you say so, right?”
