Don’t factor in a “Hacks” reboot just yet. When asked about a possible return, Hanna Einbinder told Variety: “Of course I would. Any excuse to be with my guys is fine.”
Showrunners Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky, who guided Deborah Vance and Eva Daniels from Las Vegas lounge act to late-night wreckage and back again, were uncharacteristically noncommittal when asked if the story was really over. “I’m not saying never,” the three of us said in unison. “We love the characters. We love this world. We love everyone in the ensemble. Right now, we feel like it’s okay to go out without overstaying your welcome. But you don’t have to twist my arm.”
The cast and creators of the HBO Max comedy gathered Wednesday night to toast the fifth and final season of the Emmy-winning series, which premieres April 9. Jean Smart, Einbinder, Megan Stalter, Mark Indelicato, Rose Abdoo, Robbie Hoffman and the show-running trio also came together for the occasion. If the red carpet was any indication, no one is ready to say goodbye.
The producers also confirmed that there is a new project in early development at HBO, but details have not yet been revealed.
Smart, who arrived wearing a suit she described as “a silver version of the gold suit” worn by Deborah in season one, was similarly reflective. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a relationship like Eva and Deborah’s in film or television,” she said. “The writers seem to outdo themselves and raise the bar with each lone season. This might be my favorite season.”
Emotions have been running high throughout the press tour for Einbinder, who was just 24 when the show began, and Wednesday night was no exception. “I feel like I’ve grown and become a better person on this show,” she said. “That’s a full year and a half of Saturn Return,” Einbinder said of finally being able to play the bond between Deborah and Eva as warmly as possible this season. “It’s a lot of fun and we love sparring, but it’s nice to be on the same team.”
The ensemble reflected on what they would miss most about the show, and for Stalter, there was one answer. “I’m definitely going to miss working with Paul and partnering with him the most,” she said of Downs, who plays Jimmy.
Mr. Stalter was sharing news after the “hack.” “I’ve had a lot of plastic surgery, too,” she deadpans. “Giant breasts and different legs. I also have a secret project that will be released along with my new butt and legs. There are two different things going on in my life.” Asked about returning in the event of a reboot, Stalter quipped, “Yes, it’s free. Or $5 million to share with the cast.”
Others believed that the show completely revived their love for the craft. Indelicato, who plays Deborah’s assistant Damien, said: “Paul, Lucia and Jen gave me an opportunity when there weren’t many opportunities for me at the time.” “They reinvigorated my career. They reinvigorated not only my employability, but also my love for our work.”
The 10-episode final season will air weekly until the series finale on May 28th.
