International Emmy Award-winning Indian comedian Vir Das has embarked on his next directorial venture.
The found footage horror film ‘Baara Number’ will be produced through Das’ banner Zazu Productions. The project reunites Das with Kavi Shastri, who co-directed his directorial debut, Aamir Khan Productions’ Happy Patel: Katarnak Jasoos. Das will also be part of the film’s ensemble cast.
Principal photography is scheduled to begin in June on location in Mumbai.
According to a note from Zazu Productions, “The project is positioned as a found footage horror story, blending psychological depth and atmospheric storytelling, aiming to go beyond traditional tropes.” “The film has been in development for some time and is expected to explore both external tensions and internal human emotions, offering a nuanced expression of fear.”
“Vir Das further expands his creative repertoire, moving from comedy to horror, with a focus on narrative innovation,” the note added.
Set in the world of advanced comics, ‘Happy Patel: Katarnak Jasoos’ depicts how the heroic attempts of a well-intentioned but clumsy operative create more chaos than order. The film, released on Netflix on April 1, develops an intentionally eccentric tone, mixing slapstick, satire, and spy thriller tropes with Das’s irreverent sense of comedy.
Das, one of India’s most famous comedians, won the 2023 International Emmy Award for Best Comedy for his Netflix special ‘Vir Das: Landing’. He is currently in the midst of his 2026 “Hey Stranger” tour. The 21-city tour began on February 27th at the Chicago Theater in Chicago, Illinois, touring across the United States including San Francisco, Washington, and Grand Rapids, before visiting London’s Royal Albert Hall on April 1st, and concluding on May 23rd in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
