The Hail Mary creator may be behind one of the year’s biggest films, but Andy Weir hasn’t said a word about Paramount Plus+’s recent Star Trek series, some of which he criticized in a recent interview.
“I’ll give you my opinion, but I’m just a consumer,” Weir said during a taping of the “Critical Drinking” podcast last week. I like “Strange New World”. I think it’s pretty good. I didn’t dislike “Enterprise.” I thought it was kind of strange. I thought “Lower Decks” was interesting and fun. Everyone else can go. ”
Weir also talked about pitching himself to the Star Trek team.
“And here’s the other thing: I pitched Star Trek shows to Paramount, and for every show I was on Zoom with the showrunners and talking a lot with[executive producer Alex Kurtzman],” Weir continued. “I don’t really like the new ‘Trek.’ He’s a really nice guy as a person. But at the same time, those shows are crap. He’s a nice guy.”
On March 30, Mr. Reed posted an apology to Mr. Kurtzman on Facebook. Read the full story below.
Open letter to Alex Kurtzman:
Hi Alex. Andy Weir. I’m posting this to apologize for what I said on the Critical Drinker podcast.
I feel like my quote was taken out of context and as a snarky soundbite. Did you see the other part where I said how much I love you as a person and what a wonderful person you are? I also like SNW and LD.
I was trying to be funny, but in hindsight it seems rude and mean. sorry. I was trying to be self-deprecating when I said, “But they didn’t like my pitch, so fuck it!” But out of context, it can sound like I actually said that.
I’m an outspoken person – and always have been. And it’s been 10 years since the media stopped caring about what I had to say. So when the movie was in theaters, I forgot to watch my words. In a few months, I’ll be back in my cave writing a novel and no one will care.
Anyway, if you want to talk in real time, even if it’s to introduce something new, I’m happy to hop on the phone or Zoom.
