Columbia Pictures’ sci-fi blockbuster “Project Hail Mary” topped the Chinese box office over the weekend of March 27-29, earning RMB 53.3 million ($7.5 million) in its second slot, according to data from Artisan Gateway.
The film’s cumulative box office revenue reached $18.3 million.
Disney’s animated adventure “Hoppers” rose to second place in its second weekend, earning $5 million for a total of $16.3 million.
The racing comedy “Pegasus 3” remained in third place, adding $3.4 million to the box office. The film, produced by PMF Pictures, has grossed $612.3 million since its release. The third installment of the series, directed by Han Han and starring Shen Teng, follows legendary racer Zhang Qi as he leads an underdog team into a grueling international rally.
In fourth place was the martial arts blockbuster Blades of the Guardians, which earned $1.9 million for a total of $201 million. Produced by Peace Film Production and directed by Yuen Woo-ping, this film adaptation of the popular comic follows a wandering mercenary named Dao Ma as he escorts a mysterious fugitive across the dangerous western regions to the capital Chang’an.
Rounding out the top five was the comedy-drama “It’s OK,” which earned $1.7 million in its opening frame. Produced by China Film and directed by Yang Lina, it stars Wen Qi, Qin Hailu, Bai Ke, and Li Xueqin. The story centers on Xu Ke, a young woman who prepares for an emergency medical procedure when her plans are interrupted by the sudden arrival of her mother.
Overall weekend box office revenue in mainland China reached $25.3 million, but year-to-date revenue in 2026 was $1.67 billion, a 51.3% decrease compared to the same period in 2025.
