Selena Gomez appeared as a guest on “Hannah Montana: 20th Anniversary Special” and had a heart-to-heart with Miley Cyrus, reflecting on their time on the Disney Channel show and the friendship they forged as a result.
Gomez straight up told Cyrus, “You created the culture, baby!”
Cyrus said, “You too!” and returned the compliment, acknowledging Gomez’s own accomplishments as the star of Disney Channel’s Wizards of Waverly Place.
Gomez, who guest-starred as Mikayla on Hannah Montana, asked Cyrus what it felt like to be on the recreated set. “I’m thrilled you’re here,” she replied. They then discussed how Gomez only attended the set twice but didn’t have that scene because Mikayla was more of a “Hannah’s Life” character.
Cyrus asked Gomez what she remembered from the shoot. “I remember wearing that weird blue makeup,” she recalls.
“Where did you look like an alien?” Cyrus finished.
“Yes,” she said. “I remember feeling ugly about it because we were like 15 and I wanted to be pretty and I was like, ugh!”
Later, reflecting on Hannah and Mikayla’s rivalry, Cyrus told Gomez, “Looking back, it’s almost like we had bad intentions.”
“That’s pretty mean,” Gomez agreed. “I don’t think they’ll get away with saying half a word now. That was really mean! I’m sorry!”
“But now we can make it up to you!” Cyrus said before taking her to Hannah’s closet and giving her Mikayla’s red hat. Their reunion ended peacefully, with the two stars exchanging compliments.
“I love you, girl! You’re the best,” Gomez said.
“You are!” Cyrus replied.
“And you kill it!” Gomez added. “You look amazing.”
As they walked around the set together, they reflected on how surreal this anniversary was. Silas told her, “It’s really nice to know someone for 20 years. So I’ve known you for almost 20 years.”
“That’s weird!” Gomez admitted.
“That’s really weird,” Cyrus agreed.
Ahead of the special’s premiere, Cyrus told Variety that Alex Cooper, whom she interviewed during the show, arranged for Gomez’s surprise appearance.
“I love Selena, but I had no idea how much our friendship meant to our fans,” Cyrus said.
The two stars first reunited in earnest in 2020, when Gomez appeared on Cyrus’ pandemic-era Instagram Live show, “Bright Minded.” She DMed Cyrus with a butterfly emoji, which sparked a conversation that led to Gomez’s interview on the show.
“I think you’re one of the greatest singers of all time,” Gomez told Cyrus at the time. “And I was so happy to have the opportunity to talk to you about some of the most amazing people.”
The two stars recently made headlines for reuniting at the Golden Globe Awards.
