Ryan Keira Armstrong, who was set to star in Hulu’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot as the new supernatural Buttkicker, shared a video message on his Instagram Story on Saturday afternoon after original star Sarah Michelle Gellar said she would no longer be working on the sequel series.
“I’m sure many of you have already heard this news, but I’d like to come here and thank you all for all the support you’ve given me and the show,” Armstrong said. “Throughout these past few months, it’s been a really special time. I’m really proud of what we’ve done. I’m going to miss you all, but it doesn’t take away from the amazing experiences I’ve had.” I want to say thank you to Chloe Zhao. I love you all. I also want to say thank you to my old fans and everyone who believed in this new chapter. So I’m grateful to the cast that I worked with. But what I’m saying is, we got this work back. And it’s such a huge part of our lives that no one knows what the future holds.
The new “Buffy” was first ordered for a pilot on Hulu in February 2025. Chao, director of “Hamnet,” was scheduled to serve as director and executive producer. A new chapter entitled “Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale” was established on 20th Television and Searchlight Television.
In addition to Armstrong, the pilot cast also included Farey Rakotohavana as Hugo, Ava Jean as Larkin, Sarah Bock as Gracie, Daniel Di Tomasso as Abe, and Jack Cutmore-Scott as Mr. Burke. Geller was scheduled to return as Buffy in a recurring role.
Geller announced the news that “Buffy” had been euthanized in an Instagram post on Saturday. “I’m really sad to have to share this, but I wanted everyone to hear this story. Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with production of Buffy: The New Sunnydale,” Geller said in a video post. I would like to thank Chloe Zhao. I never thought I’d wear Buffy’s stylish and affordable boots again. And Chloe reminded me how much I love her and how much she means to not only me but all of you. And this doesn’t change anything about it, and I promise you that even if the apocalypse actually comes, you can still beep at me. ”
