Kris Jenner has revealed that Kylie Jenner “used all of her Keeping Up With the Kardashians” money to launch her Kylie Cosmetics business when she was 17 years old.
The 70-year-old famous mother recalled the moment her youngest daughter approached her with the business idea on Monday’s episode of the podcast “Smartless” with Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes.
“She said, ‘Mom, I know what I want to do for the rest of my life, and that’s beauty. And I want to make this lip kit. And you have to run with this and find a way to make it,'” Chris recalled.
After a few phone calls, Chris asked his daughter what she wanted to do with the brand’s marketing campaign.
“For example, you need an ad in People magazine, and you need a sign,” she told the young entrepreneurs, emphasizing the details.
However, Kylie, now 28, is said to not have minded the small details.
“She said, ‘Are you okay, Mom? I know what I’m doing. Relax.'” And I said, “I can’t relax.” You just spent all the money you’ve made so far on Keeping Up with the Kardashians to start your own brand with your own money. And I’m a little nervous. Mom was just like…you’re 17 years old, what are you doing? ” she said.
Kylie launched her Kylie Cosmetics brand with the Kylie Jenner Lip Kit in 2015, and it quickly became a huge success, propelling the reality star to billionaire status by 2019.
“I’ll never forget the morning she launched her brand. She was the first to disrupt the entire beauty business,” Chris told the host.
“She hit send link, went and bought this, and posted, ‘Go buy my lip kit.'”
“I think it was four seconds. I thought the site crashed because we had to launch it, but it sold out in seconds. And we knew, you know, then the site launched,” Chris gushed about his daughter.
“She was the first person to do it,” she said.
Last October, Kylie celebrated the 10th anniversary of her eponymous makeup brand by releasing a limited edition King Kylie Lip Kit collection, a nod to her King Kylie days.
She also celebrated this descent with several makeup-themed shoots.
