Mike Judge receives Annecy Honorary Crystal

After honoring Michel Gondry, Joanna Quinn and Matt Groening last year, the Annecy Animation Film Festival has announced its first Honorary Crystal winners for 2026.

Prolific producer, screenwriter and animator Mike Judge, co-creator of “King of the Hill” and author of “Beavis and Butt-Head,” will receive this year’s honorary award, which will be held June 21-27.

Mike Judge was born in Ecuador in 1962, raised in New Mexico, and graduated from UCSD in 1985, where he studied physics. However, he lost interest in pursuing a career in science and began dabbling in animation in the late 1980s. This was the perfect environment for the humor and style that would later become his trademark.

At the age of 29, Judge created his first cartoon and gained attention thanks to a touring presentation of short works called “Spike and Mike’s Animation Festival”. MTV featured two of Judge’s short films. One of them is a film that marks the first appearance of Beavis and Butt-Head, two of Judge’s main characters who are actors, directors, producers, and animators. A year later, MTV commissioned a full series. The series became so popular that it now boasts over 300 episodes and is still running.

In 1995, when Beavis and Butt-Head was already becoming MTV’s most-watched animated series, Judge teamed up with five-time Emmy Award-winning writer, showrunner, director and producer Greg Daniels to create the Emmy Award-winning series King of the Hill, now a classic in American animation. Daniels, a former writer for “The Simpsons,” brought unique writing depth to the era-defining TV comedy Judge. “King of the Hill” aired for 13 seasons from 1997 to 2010, with Saladin K. Patterson serving as executive producer and showrunner, and the long-awaited 14th season aired on Hulu last year.

According to the Annecy Film Festival, the honorary crystal recognizes “the juror’s illustrious career spanning more than 30 years and his outstanding contribution to the art of animation.” Marcel Jean, artistic director of the Annecy Festival, added that Judge is a “cultural icon who has created legendary characters, pioneered new formats and seamlessly transitioned from animation to live-action”, pointing to classic works he has written, including the 2006 sci-fi cult comedy “Idiocracy” and the acclaimed series “Silicon Valley”.

Last October, perhaps in anticipation of receiving the honorary crystal, Jean wrote his own history of America’s animated television gem for the French animation magazine Blink Blank, in which he highlighted Judge’s outstanding contributions to the art of animation and to American pop culture in general.

“Judge is one of the leading figures in contemporary American adult animation, including Matt Groening, Genndy Tartakovsky, and Raphael Bob-Waksberg. …These bold creators have never been afraid to tackle controversial themes such as the rifts in American society, gender issues, identity, violence, and sex. Thanks to them, the animated series has become more than just a feature-length play. It has become a bold creative space.”

For Jean, Judge’s visit to Annecy is an important opportunity to reflect the festival’s commitment to highlighting the dynamism, social relevance, and rebellious audacity of American adult animated series. “Mike Judge’s influence on two generations of creators is undeniable. He took social satire to new heights, and we wanted to celebrate his work and him.”

In just over three months, “King of the Hill” executive producer Greg Daniels and showrunner Saladin K. Patterson will be joining Judge on Lake Annecy for a screening event in his honor. This conversation will celebrate the lasting cultural impact of both King of the Hill and Beavis and Butt-Head, while also providing viewers with an exclusive preview of King of the Hill Season 15 and an autograph session.

‘King of the Hill’ Season 14 is now streaming on Hulu in the US and Disney+ internationally.
