Steal This Story, Please!, a documentary about the life and career of independent investigative journalist Amy Goodman, has released a new trailer ahead of its theatrical release. The film explores Goodman’s work on “Democracy Now!,” a one-hour television, radio and internet news program told from a progressive perspective. This year marks the 30th anniversary of our founding.
The film was directed by Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning filmmakers Tia Lessin and Carl Diehl, the team behind Trouble the Water and Citizen Koch. “Steal This Story!” will premiere on April 10th at the IFC Center in New York. On April 17th, she will make her debut at Laemmle Noho, Royal, and Glendale in Los Angeles, as well as The Roxy in San Francisco. Additional markets through the rollout include Seattle, Portland, Boston, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Chicago, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Houston, Austin, and Dallas. Goodman will conduct Q&As at many screenings.
The film is being released at a time when newsrooms are shrinking, mainstream media is consolidating, and social media is manipulating the meaning of truth. The film presents Goodman as a key figure in the independent media movement, which amplifies voices often left out of the conversation.
“Steal this Story!” The DC/DOX Film Festival opened with its world premiere in Washington, DC on June 12, 2025. It has been a staple at the festival, winning audience awards at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Seattle International Film Festival DocFest, Woodstock Film Festival, Mill Valley International Film Festival, St. Louis International Film Festival, Hamptons DocFest, Santa Barbara Film Festival, and Santa Fe International Film Festival.
