Blair Underwood takes a closer look at Fox’s ‘Doc.’ The hit drama, which has just been renewed for a third season, has added Underwood to the cast as a series regular to commemorate the news.
“Doc” viewers will see Underwood for the first time as a guest star in the Season 2 “Doc” finale, which airs April 14. This means that he will be appearing full-time as Dr. Ben Grant starting next season.
Here’s the character of Underwood’s Dr. Grant, who seems to clash with the main character, Dr. Amy Larsen, played by series star Molly Parker: “Dr. Ben Grant is a world-class trauma and cardiothoracic surgeon with an ego that somehow outweighs his resume. With the dignity to match his once-in-a-generation talent, he saves lives. Incredibly charming and even more confident, he’s not the smartest person in the room…until he meets Dr. Amy Larsen, their approaches collide, their egos collide, and their spark is unparalleled like nothing Westside has ever seen.
In addition to Parker, Underwood joins a cast that includes Omar Metwally, Amira Vann, Jon Ecker, Anya Banerjee, Patrick Walker, Charlotte Fountain-Jardim, Felicity Huffman, and regular guest star Scott Wolf in Season 2.
The show, produced by Sony Pictures TV and Fox Entertainment and based on the Italian drama “Doc – Nelle tue mani,” centers on Dr. Amy Larsen, played by Parker. She continues to rebuild her life after losing eight years of memory in a car accident. Barbie Kligman and Hank Steinberg are co-showrunners and executive producers. Erwin Stoff, Russell Fine, John Weber, Frank Siracusa, Carol Barbee, and David Foster have also released EPs.
In addition to Elsbeth, Underwood’s recent television credits include guest appearances on Three Women, Smothered, Impeachment: American Crime Story, Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker (which won an NAACP Image Award), Dear White People, and When They See Us. His regular television work includes “Quantico,” “Dirty Sexy Money,” “The New Adventures of Old Christine,” “The Event,” and “L.A. Law.”
In film, Underwood’s current credits include “Youngblood” and the upcoming films “One Spoon of Chocolate” and “Don’t Ever Wonder.” Other recent films: Longlegs, Origin, and Viral, in which he also directed and produced, in addition to starring. Previous credits include Deep Impact, Set It Off, Rules of Engagement, Just Cause, Madea’s Family Reunion, and Full Frontal. He is also the executive producer and narrator of the documentary film “Mr. SOUL!”. and “Olympic Pride, American Prejudice.”
Underwood won an Emmy Award for his work on the Saturday morning series “Give,” eight NAACP Image Awards, and a Grammy Award for co-narrating Al Gore’s audiobook “An Inconvenient Truth.”
Underwood is repped by CAA, Thrurin, Wollman PR and Felker Tocek Suddleson Abramson McGinnis Ryan.
