Roku is launching a new trivia game-like experience called “Roklue.” It will provide users with an interactive offering for Oscar season, with further iterations throughout the year. The purpose of all this is to encourage users to stream more content.
The company describes Roklue as “a new platform game designed to immerse users in the culture of the moment and discover new entertainment in an engaging way.” The first edition, “Locru: Awards Season,” will be released on Saturday, March 7, and will feature “moments from Hollywood’s biggest award shows and cues inspired by famous movies.”
Future versions of Roklue, which will be rolled out this year, will be tied to music festivals, the Emmy Awards, and the holiday season.
The goal here is for Roklue to “evolve throughout the year with editions tied to other key cultural moments,” giving users new ways to discover the titles available on Roku. Roklue is Roku’s latest offering aimed at an avid audience, following the recent launch of “Live From Roku City,” which transformed Roku’s scrolling purple screensaver into a “dynamic stage” for Demi Lovato’s performance and the digital release of “Wicked: For Good.”
“The Roklue trivia game started with something we already had on Roku called Daily Trivia,” said Lisa Holme, head of content at Roku Media. “It used to be weekly, but now it’s daily. And there was enough interest in it that we upgraded it. So we added more interactivity and a video element. If you want to go see a clue movie while you’re playing, you’ll link directly to that movie. So we really saw enough interest from our users for a daily trivia game and thought, “Okay, how do we make this even bigger and better?” And the other part of that is there’s a lot of content out there for consumers to watch. That’s why we’re always looking for ways to connect consumers with what they want to see in a way that feels like fun and not homework. ”
Roklue can be accessed from the Roku home screen with no download or setup required to play.
“Roklue: Awards Season” is produced by B17 Entertainment, part of Sony Pictures Television. Brien Meagher and Rhett Buckner will serve as executive producers. Chris Lesinski is executive producer and showrunner.
