A “Bride Wars” TV show starring Emma Roberts is in development at Peacock.
The project is described as a “loose re-imagining” of the 2009 original film starring Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway. Roberts will play a big-city wedding planner who arrives in North Carolina and faces off against a popular local planner in an epic showdown. According to the logline, “As the two women vie to plan the same wedding, their conflict quickly escalates into a major conflict over friendship, community, and ultimately love.”
Bride Wars does not yet have an official series order. New Regency will be the lead studio on the series, with 20th Television and UCP serving as co-studio studios, and Roberts’ Belletrist and Alexandra Milchan’s Crescent Line serving as executive producers. Emmy Award winner Sacha Rothschild (GLOW, XO Kitty, The Baby-Sitters Club) will serve as writer and executive producer alongside New Regency’s Arnon Milchan, Yariv Milchan and Natalie Lehman. Bellet list includes Roberts, Carla Price and Matt Matrasky. Alexandra Milchan and Martin Salgo of Crescent Line.
The original Bride Wars was about two childhood best friends, played by Hudson and Hathaway, who become rivals when they are forced to share the same wedding venue and date. The film, directed by Gary Winnick, was released by 20th Century Fox and grossed $115 million at the worldwide box office. The film was remade in China in 2015.
Roberts is currently in production on the film “Hal,” co-starring Alexander Ludwig, and is an executive producer on “Tell Me Rise.” She is represented by Sweeney Entertainment and her attorney is JR McGuinness. Crescent Line and Alexandra Milchan are represented by attorney Gavin Wise.
