On this week’s episode of “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart addressed the right-wing’s heated reaction to the United States’ hockey win over Canada at the Olympics, mocking FBI Director Kash Patel for joining Team USA in the locker room at the celebration.
At the beginning of Monday’s show, Stewart painted a bleak picture of what America was like before Team USA won the gold medal 2-1.
“This country is in a very emotional turmoil right now,” Stewart said. “The feeling that we are one nation, besieged and divided. Perhaps we are crossing the Rubicon of this great American experiment and sliding slowly, inexorably, into the abyss of a crumbling and disintegrating democracy. But then!”
The show then cut to a clip of Jack Hughes scoring the winning goal for Team USA.
“I’m back, you son of a bitch!” Stewart yelled. “I know the powerful elites are still not in charge, but he put things behind that guy! This country was sinking into a cesspool from which we would never recover, and he put a disc of vulcanized rubber behind the masters of the internet! It was so unifying! There’s nothing that can take away from this joyful moment of all Americans celebrating this great thing — wait, what the heck is that?”
The late-night host saw Patel celebrating in Team USA’s locker room and broke off the celebration.
“Is that FBI Director Kash Patel?” Stewart added. “Are they giving FBI Director Kash Patel a medal? Is Kash Patel a wish-granter?”
Stewart then turned his attention to the right’s reaction to the victory. The show cut to footage in which conservative commentator Benny Johnson said the victory represented “a celebration of masculinity,” both of which were “absolutely and completely cleansed from the greatest feminist culture in our country, the estrogen culture.”
“First of all, it’s been a strange year for the hockey world. Like, in the last four months, we’ve gone from, ‘No one cares about hockey,’ to, ‘Well, we like watching them play,’ to, ‘Hockey is the only thing that can save us from a dystopian, estrogenic future,'” Stewart joked, referencing HBO’s popular queer hockey series, Rivals. “Perhaps the strangest thing is how this victory in a hockey game is perceived on the geopolitical right.”
Stewart then cut out a Fox News clip in which contributors said Canadians were “basically communists” and that “all they had was hockey, and we took it away.”
“What’s the deal with winning and losing?” Stewart joked. “By the way, don’t we have enough real enemies? Now we have to act as if the Canadian way of life is incongruous to the West? “Yes! Fuck the absolutely best neighbor our country has ever had!”
