Netflix’s animated series Terminator Zero has been canceled after one season.
Series creator Mattson Tomlin wrote on his official X (formerly Twitter) account: “The response from critics and viewers was incredible, but in the end, there weren’t nearly enough viewers.” “We wanted to have the futuristic war that we had planned for Seasons 2 and 3, but we’re also really happy with how it feels like it’s being captured the way it is.”
“Maybe at some point we’ll do a big thread about the plans we had throughout Season 5,” he continued. “The series finale was special and was part of my pitch to get this job. I wrote all the scripts for season 2 and almost all the synopsis for season 3… I’ll probably be returning to that world in a different way. I really love this world and it was very gratifying to see so many people engage with it in this way.”
The news that the series won’t be returning isn’t entirely surprising considering it originally debuted in August 2024 and there hasn’t been any announcement about a renewal since then. Still, this is the first official confirmation that the project won’t be returning for a second season.
Set in the “Terminator” world established by the blockbuster movie series, the show’s logline reads, “A soldier sent into the past to change the fate of humanity is caught between the future and the past. It protects a scientist named Malcolm Lee as he works to launch a new AI system to counter an impending attack by Kynet. As Malcolm navigates the moral complexities of his creation, he is pursued by the bad guys.” A ruthless assassin from the future who forever changes the fate of three children. ”
The show’s English audio cast included Andre Holland, Sonoya Mizuno, Sumary Montano, Gideon Adlon, Armani Jackson, Carter Lockwood, Rosario Dawson, and Timothy Olyphant. The Japanese dubbing cast includes Yuya Uchida, Toa Yukinari, Saori Hayami, Hiro Shimono, Miyuki Sato, Shizuka Ishigami, Atsumi Tanezaki, and Yasuhiro Mamiya.
Tomlin developed the series and served as showrunner and executive producer. Japanese animator Masashi Kudo directed the series. Additional executive producers include David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger via Skydance. The animation studio is Production IG.
