Amazon MGM Studios is adapting the first film in Mercedes Ron’s Bali series.
“30 Sunsets para enamorarte” (“30 Sunsets to Fall in Love with”) centers on Nikki, a veterinarian based in Bali who teaches yoga in her spare time. One day, when pilot Alex lands on his island to escape the London rat race, Nicky quickly finds herself squarely in the crosshairs. But with only 30 days to spend together, it’s not so clear whether Nikki and Alex are ready to commit. Especially if they’re both hiding something.
The project will be the first U.S. film adaptation of a novel by the Argentine-Spanish bestselling author.
Ron is a trusted source of inspiration for Prime Video, having adapted 10 of her books to date, seven in Spanish and three in English (non-UK). This includes the “Culpables” trilogy (“My Fault,” “Your Fault,” “Our Fault: London”) and the twin “Enfrentados” novels.
The prolific author’s books have sold millions of copies worldwide and been translated into 26 languages in 50 countries. Prime Video sees Ron, 32, as “crucial” in building content for younger audiences as well as developing series both in the U.S. and internationally, from “The Summer I Turned Pretty” to Germany’s “Maxton Hall.”
The Culpables series, about a stubborn girl whose life is forever changed when her mother moves her family into her wealthy boyfriend’s mansion, has become the most-watched international original on Prime Video worldwide, debuting at number one in more than 170 countries, with 90% of its streams coming from outside Spain. “Culpables” content is also hugely popular on TikTok, with over 2.7 billion views. The trailer for “Culpa Nuestra” has been viewed 327 million times across social platforms.
Kalpa Mia, directed by Domingo Gonzalez, will be released in 2023 and stars Nicole Wallace as Noah and Gabriel Guevara as Nick. A British adaptation, My Fault, was produced two years later, directed by Dani Girdwood and Charlotte Fassler. Starring Asha Banks and Matthew Bloom.
