Brad Arnold, lead singer of Three Doors Down, has died at the age of 47.
The surviving members of the band announced his death via social media on Saturday. “It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that Brad Arnold, founder, lead singer and songwriter of 3 Doors Down, passed away on Saturday, February 7th at the age of 47,” the statement read.
“He passed away peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by his loved ones, after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving wife Jennifer and family.”
The statement said Arnold “helped redefine mainstream rock music by fusing post-grunge accessibility with emotionally direct songwriting and lyrical themes that resonate with everyday listeners. His songwriting became a cultural touchstone for a generation and produced some of the most enduring hits of the 2000s, including the band’s smash hit ‘Kryptonite.’ “It’s a song he wrote in math class when he was 15 years old.”
The musician added: “He was a devoted husband to Jennifer, and his kindness, humor and generosity touched all who were lucky enough to know him. Those who were close to him will remember not only his talent, but also his warmth, humility, faith and deep love for his family and friends.”
Arnold announced in May 2025 that he was battling stage 4 kidney cancer.
“Hey everyone, this is Brad from Three Doors Down,” he said in a social media video at the time. “I hope you have a wonderful day today.”
He added: “Today is not very good news.”
“So, I got sick a few weeks ago and I went to the hospital and got tested and was diagnosed with clear cell renal cell carcinoma that had spread to my lungs. It’s stage 4, which is not very good.”
Arnold said at the time that he was “not afraid” of the condition.
“I’m really not scared at all,” he said. “But I’m going to have to cancel my tour this summer, and I’m sorry about that. And I want you to pray every time you get a chance to cheer me up. And I think it’s time to go listen to a little bit of ‘It’s Not My Time,’ don’t you?”
The musician is survived by his wife Jennifer; He also leaves behind current band members Chris Henderson, Greg Upchurch, Chet Roberts and Justin Biltonen.
Matt Roberts, founding member and guitarist of 3 Doors Down, passed away in 2016 at the age of 38.
