NBC increases security for ‘Today’ show after Savannah Guthrie’s mother disappears

NBC News already provides security services for talent, including the hosts of the “Today” show. But the network has increased security measures at Today in recent days following the mysterious disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Today co-host Savannah Guthrie.

According to reports, private security services and the New York City Police Department have increased their presence for “Today,” including near the morning show’s street-level studios across from 30 Rockefeller in Manhattan. Officials investigating Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance have given no indication that Savannah Guthrie or any other Today show cast member was being targeted.

A CNN report published Friday said NBC implemented additional security measures “out of an abundance of caution.” The report said the move “may help alleviate some of the stress that show hosts feel when talking about unsolved mysteries on air each morning.”

An NBC News spokesperson declined to comment.

Nancy Guthrie, 84, has been missing since January 31, when she was last seen at her home in Arizona. Local police and the FBI are treating her disappearance as a possible kidnapping and are offering a $50,000 reward for key clues in the case.

On Wednesday, Savannah Guthrie posted a video on Instagram pleading with her and her siblings to denounce their mother’s kidnappers. “We are ready to talk. But we live in a world where sounds and images are easily manipulated,” she said. “We need to know without a shadow of a doubt that she is alive and that you have her. We want to hear from you and we are ready to listen.”

Savannah Guthrie was scheduled to co-host NBC’s broadcast of the 2026 Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Milan, but remained in the United States as the investigation into her mother’s disappearance continues. NBC commentators Mary Carrillo and Terry Gannon began the network’s Olympic coverage on Friday and congratulated Guthrie.

Early Friday morning, former “Today” host Hoda Kotb returned to her morning show to show support for Savannah Guthrie and her family. Kotb left the show a year ago. She was Guthrie’s co-anchor of Today from 2018 until her departure in January 2025. “I just want to say that all of this is breaking my heart, but I’m glad to be able to sit here with you all,” Kotb said. To which Sheinelle Jones responded, “Because you’re family!”
