‘RRR’ director SS Rajamouli’s next film ‘Varanasi’ has announced its worldwide theatrical release date, making the Indian film one of the major international releases in 2027.
This action-adventure blockbuster reunites the ‘RRR’ director with Oscar-winning composer MM Keeravani, who won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for ‘Naatu Naatu’ from ‘RRR’. The Telugu film’s Mahesh Babu will lead the cast along with Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran.
The film’s story spans thousands of years and locations traverse multiple continents, from Antarctica to Africa to storied cities in India. According to the film’s promotional materials, it is “in the lineage of Indiana Jones and James Bond.” Mahesh Babu plays the protagonist Rudra, Chopra Jonas plays the character Mandakini, and the main antagonist Kumbha is played by Sukumaran. Rajamouli released the first look of the project in November.
Varanasi will be released in theaters worldwide on April 7, 2027.
Rajamouli’s RRR became a global phenomenon upon its release in 2022, garnering widespread critical acclaim and audience enthusiasm far beyond the traditional Indian film market, and its Academy Award success marks a milestone for Indian cinema on the international stage. It is the fifth highest grossing film in Indian film history.
Babu is one of the biggest stars in Indian cinema, with a career spanning over 20 years in Telugu films such as ‘Srimanthudu’, ‘Bharat Ane Nenu’ and ‘Maharshi’.
Chopra Jonas has built a career that bridges the gap between Bollywood and Hollywood, with her Bollywood credits including ‘Bajirao Mastani’, ‘Mary Kom’ and ‘Barfi!’, and her Hollywood credits include ‘The Citadel’ series, ‘Baywatch’ and ‘The Matrix Resurrections’.
Sukumaran is a pan-Indian star who has worked in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi films, and has recently appeared in the Telugu action drama ‘Salar: Part 1 – Ceasefire’, the Bollywood film ‘Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan’ and the Malayalam film ‘The Goat Life’.
