Margot Robbie saved her most gorgeous look at the Wuthering Heights press tour for the film’s world premiere in Los Angeles last night. The star wore a custom Schiaparelli ball gown with a sheer lace bodice and a black and red peplum ombre skirt.
She accessorized with a Fred Leighton ring and a famous Cartier piece packed with romance and history: the Taj Mahal necklace that Richard Burton gave Elizabeth Taylor for her 40th birthday in 1972.
On the red carpet, Robbie broke down her look to Variety and explained the meaning of her custom dress. “This is Wuthering Heights,” she said. “We thought, ‘What would it look like if we made Wuthering Heights into a dress?'” So it was like the idea that it would soak into the ground that we knew was going to be red, the red carpet, in this case the red lacquered floor, and it would seep into the dress, the lace, and kind of the dark decay of Wuthering Heights[the mansion]. And our costumes will evolve throughout the press tour and cover some of the other sets and ideas from the movie. ”
Robbie’s necklaces have their own rich stories behind them. This pendant’s history dates back to the 1600s, when Mughal Emperor Shah Jahangir gifted the diamond to his wife Nur Jahan. Along with her name is an inscription in Parsi that means “Love is Eternal.” According to Forbes, Cartier acquired the stone in the mid-20th century.
As Town & Country reported, Elizabeth Taylor’s estate auctioned off the necklace for $8.8 million by Christie’s in 2011, but the buyer questioned its authenticity and asked for the sale to be canceled. Christie’s refunded the buyer, sparking a series of legal disputes between the auction house and the estate that are still ongoing in 2017.
Still, Robbie and her stylist, Andrew Mukamal, managed to get the piece for the night and managed to put it back in the spotlight.
