Ariana Grande is revisiting some of her old fashion choices.
The “Wicked” actress sat down with Vogue to run through 21 looks, from her first red carpet to her latest and everything in between.
Grande has had many fashion eras, but the most memorable was nearly a decade ago, when she stayed ahead of trends by almost exclusively wearing oversized sweatshirts (no pants) and thigh-high boots.
“This was a very strange time in my life,” she said, looking at a photo of herself leaving her old New York City apartment in a black sweatshirt, thigh-high boots, and a green belt bag slung around her waist.
“I was processing a lot and always wanted to hide in a really cozy place. But I remember still feeling depressed when I had my boots on,” she said.
Grande continued, “At the time, I really didn’t have the mental energy to think about how to dress. So the easiest thing for me was to just wear a sweatshirt and active boots, and that’s what happened.”
It was a tumultuous time for pop stars. In 2017, she was killed by a bomber during a concert in Manchester, England, killing 22 people and injuring more than 500 others.
Of this event, she later said, “May 22, 2017 left me speechless and will be filled with questions for the rest of my life.”
In September 2018, her ex-boyfriend Mac Miller died of an accidental overdose at the age of 26. She also had a whirlwind relationship with Pete Davidson that started in May and got engaged less than a month later, but they broke up in October 2018.
Just a few months ago, Grande made a rare comment about the late rapper, saying, “I owe him a lot of credit for finding my sound,” and revealing that he was the one who helped her shed her Nickelodeon character and embrace her natural brown hair. “Malcolm encouraged me to be myself.”
In her new video, Grande also talks about her bright red hair, which she sports on her channel.
She laughed and joked that when she landed the role of Cat on Victorious, she “signed” her hair to Nickelodeon, which resulted in her hair being bright red.
She also clapped back at those who disliked one of her other notable traits. “This is my bushy eyebrows. See, I was thinking of that here,” she said when shown the photo from “Victorious.”
“This was right in between when they were Archie, and this is when I started correcting them because I actually like that about them. I know you don’t think that, but I love them. I’m so sorry. I hope that’s okay,” she added.
