Nintendo and Illumination have released a new trailer for Super Mario Galaxy Movie featuring Mario’s apple-loving dinosaur friend Yoshi. The anime sequel will premiere in April.
The trailer shows Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) helping a small desert village unclog pipes hidden deep within an ancient temple. After passing through a creepy dungeon, they discover a faulty pipe and unclog it. And hiding in a pile of jagged rubble, waiting for the brothers is their future companion, Yoshi.
Yoshi first appeared in the Mario series in the 1990 NES classic Super Mario World. In this game and all other Mario platformers since then, Yoshi acts as a rideable vehicle, giving players access to his iconic tongue attack. Yoshi gives players extra hits and increased mobility. Yoshi can also be used as a pseudo-double jump to cross very long gaps. That is, if the player is heartless enough to drop a fellow dinosaur into the abyss they wish to traverse. Yoshi’s first standalone game was 1995’s Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island. The game featured an entire breed of colorful Yoshis who were tasked with protecting baby Mario and rescuing baby Luigi from the clutches of the evil wizard Kamek. “Yoshi’s Island” was the first game to feature Yoshi’s egg throwing and iconic flutter jumping abilities.
The first “Super Mario Bros. Movie” was released in April 2023 and grossed $1.36 billion at the worldwide box office. The film is currently the fifth highest grossing animated film of all time and the 19th highest grossing film of all time. Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, The Super Mario Bros. Movie stars Pratt as Mario, Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad.
“Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” based on the 2007 Wii game “Super Mario Galaxy,” sees Horvath and Jelenic return as directors. New cast members include Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr. and Brie Larson as Rosalina. Plot details have not yet been revealed.
