Charli XCX talks about the change in her relationship with her blockbuster album Brat.
The pop star appeared in three films that screened at Sundance this week.
She said she wanted to “try” a new project.
This week, Charli XCX is making multiple appearances in Park City, Utah to promote three different projects at Sundance. In a revealing interview, the star reflected on her wildly popular album Brat and the ongoing cultural impact of Brat Summer.
After director Aidan Zamiri’s debut mockumentary The Moment starring Charlie, she reflected that being an artist means exploring new types of projects.
“Right now, unlike me (from ‘The Moment’), I want Brat to stop,” she told Deadline. “And I actually veer away from that as much as possible. It’s not because I don’t like it, it’s because as artists we all want to challenge ourselves.”
Charlie has also appeared in Cathy Yan’s The Gallerist and Greg Araki’s I Want Your Sex.
After the first screening, Zamiri said, “Obviously, this movie is about the end of Brat’s summer, but hopefully everyone can somehow find some way in how this movie relates to them and the fear of letting something go.”
Charlie continued, “I want to completely switch up my creative soup and live in a different bowl for a while and feel enriched by that. And I think that’s how I feel about the projects I’m working on in film. I really want to work with great directors like Aidan and Greg Araki and Cathy Yan. I feel like I can live a completely different life than them.”
