It has been announced that Carla Souza from “How to Get Away with Murder,” Daniel Jimenez Cacho (“Zama”), and Alvaro Guerrero (“Ingobernable”) will co-star with Diego Luna in “Mexico 86,” produced by Gaumont USA and directed by Gabriel Lipstein (“600 Miles”).
The film is currently in the final stages of post-production, and Mexico has been named to host the 1986 Cup and is one of the additional cast members of “Mexico 86,” one of several upcoming soccer films and series titles to be released during the FIFA World Cup soccer year.
Souza and the rest of the cast were revealed by Netflix at a press event in Mexico City on Thursday, with the US streaming giant also announcing that an upcoming feature-length documentary about Mexican boxing world four-division middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will be released globally as a Netflix original. In further news, Netflix also announced a new series starring Lord of the Skies star Fernanda Castillo and Who Killed Sarah? as it digs deeper into its 2026 release schedule. In addition to starring Manolo Cardona, it will also be Netflix’s first live event in Latin America. Also released are a first look photo from Mexico 86, featuring a muscular Luna who is almost unrecognizable behind a large, outdated mustache, and a first look photo from Santita, starring Gael García Bernal opposite Paulina Dávila in the first Netflix series.
“We are excited to discover new ways of storytelling in Mexico. In 2026, we will present an unparalleled variety of stories that explore new perspectives and genres, driven by the creativity and passion of Mexico’s best talent,” Carolina Leconte, Vice President of Mexican Content and Regional Licensing, said at Thursday’s event. “From epic drama to comedy, adventure, action and the best in live entertainment. These titles not only reflect our culture, but also celebrate who we are, leave our mark and build our collective memory,” she added.
