Mediapro Studio, Infinity Hill and IP4 have teamed up to co-produce “The Blue Box” (“La Caja Azul”), a Spanish-language thriller set in the world of dating apps.
Production partners include MoJo Global Arts, Sepia Films, Film Suez, Salta Violeta, Tronito, Life Is One and Habethy Films.
Starring Gustavo Bassani, the Emmy-nominated star of Yoshi, and Argentina’s Luisana Lopilato (Marriage App), this suspense drama centers on Pablo (Bassani), a wealthy but lonely young man who is traumatized by a fatal car accident. He meets Lara (Lopilato) through a dating app related to the titular blue box exchange. As their relationship deepens, Lara brings Pablo out of his shell. However, an anonymous alert warned Pablo that Lara may not be all that she seems.
“What begins as an intimate relationship gradually turns into a tense psychological game of cat and mouse, forcing Pablo to confront both his past and the true nature of the woman he is in love with,” the synopsis concludes.
“Blue Box” “allows us to explore the norms of the classic thriller,” said Argentinian director Martín Hodara, who directed every episode of “Yoshi,” along with showrunner/writer/director Daniel Berman and writer/director Sebastian Borenstein. “Through that narrative mechanism, you can delve into the psychology and inner tensions of the characters.”
The feature, a modern take on themes of desire, control, memory and family trauma, is scheduled for release later this year.
“This is the kind of bold, original filmmaking that illuminates the complexities of the modern world through a classic genre story. We are excited to work with our production partners to bring Martín Hodala’s groundbreaking vision to audiences around the world,” said JC Acosta, president of Madrid-based Mediapro Studio US & Canada, a leading production and distribution company with 53 offices worldwide. His work has won two Academy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, two Daytime Awards, and multiple Goya Awards.
Infinity Hill’s Axel Krzewatzky added: “I love this relentless movie that keeps the audience on their toes and surprises us.” “Additionally, working with an incredible team of actors, technicians and producers makes the whole experience a dream come true.” Founded by Krzebatzky, Cindy Teperman and Finn Grin, Infinity Hill’s notable credits include “Argentina, 1985,” which received Oscar and BAFTA nominations and won a Golden Globe.
The thriller’s multiple producers include Kuszewatsky, Tepelman, Delfina Montecchia, Pablo Iacoviello, Sharon Winds, Morris Raskin, Helena Thom, Anthony Epp, Mariano Peruffo, Gonzalo Arias and Mariano Suez.
Acosta, Francesca Licani, Tina Pame, Kim Roberts, Ali Tan, Joseph Melicker, Glynn, Lopilato and Bassani will serve as executive producers.
