Godzilla Minus Zero, the sequel to the successful Godzilla Minus One, will be released in North America on November 6th by Toho and GKids. This release took place just three days after the film’s release in Japan, and according to Toho, it is unusual for Godzilla films made in Japan to be released at almost the same time.
The film will be released in Japan on November 3rd, the same day that the original Godzilla was released in theaters in 1954, which is now Godzilla Day. Godzilla Minus One was also released in Japan on November 3, 2023, and became the highest-grossing Japanese Godzilla movie and won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects.
Takashi Yamazaki will continue as director, scriptwriter, and VFX supervisor for “Godzilla Minus Zero”. Details of the story have not been released, but production is already underway at Toho Studio, and Shirogumi will be in charge of robot production and visual effects.
The sequel’s title was revealed during Godzilla Fest in November, after the 2024 sequel was first announced.
In North America, “Godzilla Minus One” earned $56 million, making it the highest-grossing Japanese live-action film in history. It was the first Godzilla film to be nominated for an Oscar, and the first Japanese feature film to win in the visual effects category.
Yamazaki told Variety last year that Godzilla Minus One was made for $15 million, and the budget for the sequel will likely be even bigger. He also reflected on the use of AI in filmmaking, saying, “I’ve been shooting on film until recently and I like working with miniatures. So I know that at some point I’ll have to embrace AI and work with it, but I’ll probably be one of the latter because I like working with older technologies and techniques.”
