Kathryn Hahn isn’t done playing Disney villains yet.
Variety reports that the “Agatha All Along” star is set to star as the villainous Mother Gothel in the studio’s live-action film “Rapunzel.”
Hahn is still in negotiations, but previously reported Teagan Croft as Rapunzel and Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider will join as the third lead. Mother Gothel is a villain in the original animated film who poses as Rapunzel’s overprotective guardian while secretly using her magical hair to maintain her youth and beauty. Disney has not commented on this matter.
Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman) will direct the project, which is expected to begin later this year. Kristen Barr (Freaky Friday, Cruella) is producing from a script by multihyphenate Jennifer Katin Robinson (Someone Great, Do Revenge, I Know What You Did Last Summer).
The original “Rapunzel” was released in 2010 and grossed approximately $600 million worldwide. The voice cast included Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, Brad Garrett, and Donna Murphy, who played Mother Gothel.
Hahn is on the rise for her role as Maya Mason, a foul-mouthed prostitute film marketing executive for a label, in Apple’s award-winning “The Studio.” The comedy follows Disney+’s “Agatha” series, a spin-off from “WandaVision” in which she made her debut as Marvel’s witch Agatha Harkness. She will next be seen in David O. Russell’s John Madden biopic Madden, starring Christian Bale, Nicolas Cage, Sienna Miller and John Mulaney.
She previously appeared in series such as “Mrs. Fletcher,” “Tiny Beautiful Things,” and “Transparent.”
