Jelly Roll, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Chrissy Teigen will join Netflix’s upcoming “Star Search” revival as judges, the streamer announced Tuesday.
Jelly Roll, Gellar and Teigen will premiere “Star Search” live on Netflix on January 20th. The new edition of the talent competition series will be hosted by Anthony Anderson. The five-week event will air new episodes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 9pm ET/6pm PT and feature real-time voting via your TV remote or mobile app.
Jesse Collins Entertainment (Beyoncé Bowl, Super Bowl Halftime Show, Rhythm + Flow) is the new Star Search production company, with Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon, Madison Merritt, Elaine Metaxas, Taraji P. Henson and Steve Mosko serving as executive producers. The showrunners are Jason Ruff (America’s Got Talent, Clash of the Choirs) and David Friedman (Bring the Funny, The Four).
The logline for the new “Star Search” is: “Twenty years after its broadcast, the show Returning as a nostalgic yet fresh entry into the competition field, ready to captivate both long-time fans and a whole new generation…Each episode features the best up-and-coming performers across numerous categories, including music, dance, variety, comedy, magic, junior, and more. The series spotlights players as they compete head-to-head for a chance at stardom. The series’ arc-driven competition structure and weekly eliminations via real-time global voting make every live episode a can’t-miss event.”
Jelly Roll (real name Jason Deford) has been nominated for seven Grammy Awards. His recent album, Beautiful Broken, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, and also debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Country chart for the second time, with hits such as “I Am Not Okay,” “Liar,” “Winning Streak,” and “Heart of Stone.” Geller, best known as the star of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, will next reprise her role as Buffy Summers in a revival of the Hulu series. Her other recent credits include “Dexter: Original Sin,” “Wolf Pack,” and the upcoming Searchlight feature “Ready or Not 2.” Teigen founded the food and lifestyle brand Cravings, is a best-selling cookbook author, and is a television personality.
