Former Ukrainian Olympic skater Oksana Baiul has spoken out about her reaction to losing primary custody of her 10-year-old daughter Sofia to her ex-husband Carlo Farina.
On Monday, January 5, Baiul (48) and Farina reached a divorce settlement. According to court documents previously obtained by PEOPLE, Farina will be granted primary custody of Sophia and will be allowed to move with the child from Louisiana to Las Vegas.
The gold medalist spoke out in a Facebook post on Monday, January 5, following the custody agreement.
“As anyone who has gone through a separation or divorce knows, it’s a long and often devastating journey,” she began.
“Divorce is difficult enough, but when you have children, you have to prioritize them. As mothers, we ask that you respect our privacy at this time as we build a new future…” the mother wrote alongside a photo of herself and Sofia at the skating rink.

The agreement also states that if the former figure skater requests to meet with her daughter and Sophia agrees, Farina will make a good faith effort to arrange a meeting, according to the document.
Baiul also agreed to take anger management classes and undergo drug and alcohol testing to ensure he remained sober.
On Christmas Day, Baiul posted a video on Facebook showing a glimpse of one of his sobriety chips, calling the accomplishment a “gift.”
The former couple also agreed that Ms. Baiul would not have to pay child support and that neither would pay spousal support during that time. Both parties will have to list their Louisiana homes, and Baiul may live in another home they co-own for a while.
The housing decision comes after Baiul announced in October that she would be putting her Louisiana home on the market and moving out of state. At the time, Baiul said on social media that it was because he couldn’t find a job.

A few months ago, in August, Baiul announced her divorce on Facebook, saying, “My husband and I are divorcing 🙏🏻. I’m asking for prayers and praying for @sophiabaiulfarina.” She added, “#Sobriety💕 In God’s hands, thank you for this lesson ❤️🩹.”
According to Shreveport CBS affiliate KSLA-TV, Baiul and her estranged husband Carlo Farina began divorce proceedings over the summer. The couple welcomed Sophia in June 2015, according to a Facebook post celebrating her ninth birthday.
