‘Fire and Ashes’ tops box office in UK, Ireland in third weekend

Disney’s Avatar: Fire and Ashes topped the UK and Ireland box office for the third week in a row, adding 4.4 million pounds ($6 million) for a total of 31.6 million pounds ($42.8 million), according to ComScore.

Lionsgate UK’s erotic thriller The Housemaid, starring Sidney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, continued its strong second place, taking in $5.2 million in its second slot and reaching $16.7 million after two weekends.

Entertainment Film Distributors’ “Marty Supreme,” starring Timothée Chalamet, moved into third place with $3.7 million, pushing its total to $8.1 million in two weeks. Disney’s “Zootopia 2” followed in fourth place with $2.8 million in box office revenue, bringing the six-week total to $37.2 million.

Paramount’s “The SpongeBob Movie: The Search for Squarepants” rounded out the top five, earning $1.6 million in its second week and a total of $8.1 million.

Further down the charts, Universal debuted Craig Brewer’s Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson vehicle “Son San Bleu” with $1.3 million, while Sony’s “Anaconda” added $1.1 million for a total of $5.3 million.

Universal’s long-running hit “Wicked: For Good” remained in eighth place, grossing $820,000 and a solid $62.9 million after seven weekends.

Trinity Filmed Entertainment’s Hong Kong action title “Back to the Past” debuts at No. 9 with $341,000, while Mubi’s “Sentimental Value” rounds out the top 10, adding $247,000 for a total of $821,000.

Upcoming releases will begin on Thursday with Telugu title ‘The Raja Saab’ starring Prabhas from Pratyangira Cinema.

The first notable wide release of the new year will be Universal Pictures’ “Hamnet,” opening in more than 300 locations. Directed by Chloé Zhao and based on Maggie O’Farrell’s best-selling novel, the film stars Jesse Buckley and Paul Mescal, with Emily Watson and Joe Alwyn in supporting roles.

Friday also sees the release of Jim Henson’s classic fantasy “Labyrinth,” which returns to theaters via Park Circus to celebrate its 40th anniversary. The David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly titles will be widely republished on over 100 sites.

On the professional front, True Brit Entertainment is releasing the boxing docudrama “Giant” starring Pierce Brosnan and Amir El Masry, and Dartmouth Films is producing the documentary “Becoming Victoria Wood.” Directed by Catherine Abbott, the film also features Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders, Maxine Peake and Joan Armatrading.
