‘The Princess Bride’ star Cary Elwes pays tribute to Rob Reiner

Cary Elwes, who starred in Rob Reiner’s 1987 fantasy classic The Princess Bride, released a statement on Instagram Monday night in memory of the director and his wife Michelle Singer, who were found dead in their Brentwood home on December 14th.

“Enough time has passed and I am finally able to express my sadness,” Elwes wrote in the caption of the post. “I was 24 years old when I first met Rob Reiner on The Princess Bride. And from that first meeting, I fell in love with him. I was already a fan of his work, so meeting him in person was a dream come true. Once we started spending more time together, I realized this was the person I wanted in life.”

Elwes recalled that the first thing he noticed about Reiner was that he “valued his heart” and “always tried to find the good in people.” He added that Reiner “loved making movies,” but more than that, he loved “the experience itself.”

“He used to say, ‘Once a movie comes out, it’s somebody else’s, but while you’re making it, it’s your time on this earth, so you want it to be good,'” Elwes recalled. “And the time I spent with him on ‘The Princess Bride’ was amazing. I can’t remember a day when I wasn’t laughing. This movie is about love, loyalty and sacrifice. Things that Rob valued. That’s one of the many reasons why he was the perfect person to direct this film.”

Elwes concluded his statement by thanking Reiner and Singer for sharing their lives with him and the world at large.

“The pain of losing you so soon will probably never go away because my heart still hurts every time I think of you. Sure, death can’t stop true love, but life is painful without you.”

The cause of death for Reiner and Singer was “multiple sharp force injuries,” according to Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office records. Hours after her body was found, her son, Nick Reiner, was arrested and charged with murder on Monday morning. He lost his parents Tuesday afternoon and was charged with two counts of murder.
