Paul Anka is happy to confirm long-standing rumors about Frank Sinatra’s treasure.
“Yeah, it was huge,” he told Page Six in a recent exclusive interview, before adding with a laugh:
The 84-year-old singer hangs out with Sinatra and the Rat Pack in Las Vegas and often takes saunas with them.
“I had a hard time making eye contact,” Anka says cheekily, before pointing out that Sinatra had no idea about Milton Berle.
“Crazy, more than anything,” Anka mutters, “Milton Berle!”
Still, Sinatra’s second wife, Ava Gardner, previously said her husband’s penis weighed 19 pounds.
The singer-songwriter is forever associated with Sinatra because he wrote the English lyrics for Ol’ Blue Eyes’ signature hit, “My Way.”
While vacationing in France, Anka heard a French song called “Comme d’havetuned”. He liked the song and immediately bought the rights to it.
Back in New York, Anka sat down at his typewriter and wrote out the now legendary lyrics.
He was only 24 years old.
The “Puppy Love” singer said it was “one of the few times I sat there and said, ‘I think we really got something,’ because you don’t know if you’re going to have a hit song or not…And I sat there and said, ‘Hey, where did this come from?'”
He immediately sent the song to Sinatra, who recorded it two months later and called Anka from the recording studio.
“He said, ‘Listen to this kid,'” Anka recalled. “I put my phone next to the speaker. The first time I heard this song was (and) I was 24 years old. I can’t tell you (how) I wrote it.”
The song was later covered by many artists, including Elvis Presley and Sid Vicious, and was performed during the credits of “Goodfellas.”
Anka is still going strong after all these years.
He is the subject of the HBO Max documentary “Paul Anka: My Way,” which premieres Dec. 1, and a new album is expected to be released early next year.
