Kim Kardashian’s 2022 Met Gala regret may not be what you think.
For this event, the reality TV star chose an archival dress to walk the red carpet.
But it was more than just a dress. It was the iconic beaded tank gown that Marilyn Monroe famously wore to sing “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” to President John F. Kennedy in 1962.
In the post-credits confessional scene of Episode 6 of The Kardashians on Hulu, Kardashian talks about the one thing she would have done differently if she could travel back in time to 2022.
According to the 45-year-old, she should have stuck to her natural dark brunette shade instead of bleaching her hair to blonde. The point was not to compete with the deceased Hollywood icon, but to pay homage to it.
“I don’t know why, but people told me, ‘Don’t wear Marilyn’s hair, you’ll look like a Marilyn wax figure,'” she said. “We just wanted to be blonde. We should have dark hair like Jackie O.”
In the end, Kardashian and hairstylist Chris Appleton went for Marilyn blonde, but she says she had some doubts about the choice.
Four and a half years later, Kardashian still struggles with that decision. “In fact, I actually Photoshopped it 500 times after the fact to see it. Do you want to see it? Because I gave Chris Appleton a hard time with this decision.”
Kardashian asked as she quickly pulled up images on her phone to show producers and photographers. “Should I have had blonde hair, more like Marilyn? Should I have had darker hair, more like Jackie O? Either would have been fine.”
The theme of that year’s Costume Institute exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art was “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” which inspired Kardashian to seek out iconic pieces of American fashion history.
That said, the star experienced major backlash after wearing a gown that was pulled directly from a display case in a public exhibition hall.
This look was established in Ripley’s Believe It or Not! The museum then sold it at auction for more than $5 million.
Kardashian changed into a replica for the party, but the original dress was reportedly damaged that night – all for Kardashian’s photoshoot.
Ripley’s has denied that there was any damage.
Despite the ongoing controversy, critics don’t seem to understand the “All’s Fair” actress. Her biggest regret about her entire appearance that night remains the color of her slicked back hair.
