Ariana Grande reveals she has coronavirus, days after Cynthia Erivo fell ill

Ariana Grande revealed that she has tested positive for the new coronavirus at the end of her press tour for Wicked: For Good.

Grande, 32, shared a photo of herself from The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday, Nov. 18 to her Instagram Stories on Thursday, Nov. 20, captioning the post, “Right before coronavirus.”

After Grande shared the post on Instagram, Variety reported that Grande declined to appear on The Kelly Clarkson Show this week and is scheduled to skip the Wicked: For Good Q&A panel in the coming days. As reported by Variety, Wicked co-star Cynthia Erivo will continue to appear on The Kelly Clarkson Show.

Grande’s health announcement came on Monday, November 17, three days after she and Erivo, 38, missed most of the press conference at the New York premiere of For Good. Universal Pictures announced before the event that Erivo had lost her voice and was “not feeling well.” The two women posed for photos on the event’s red carpet and spoke briefly on a livestream hosted at the premiere. “I’m not letting[Erivo]talk,” Grande explained during the interview, but Erivo made a short comment in a hoarse voice.

Grande’s coronavirus revelation came at the end of a frustrating press tour for her 2024 Wicked sequel, For Good. Grande was unable to attend the film’s premiere in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Nov. 4 “due to safety issues” on the plane. At the film’s premiere in Singapore on November 13th, a man lunged at actress Glinda and grabbed her while she was walking on the red carpet with her co-stars.

(The man, identified as 26-year-old Johnson Wen from Australia, pleaded guilty to one count of public nuisance and was sentenced to nine days in jail, The New York Times reported on Monday, November 17.)

Erivo and Grande revealed that they each separately contracted COVID-19 while attending press to promote their first film, Wicked, in 2024, days before filming “some of the most important work in the whole movie,” as Grande once told The New York Times.

Meanwhile, Erivo told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show on Nov. 19 that her voice is “still missing when I’m active, but she’s there.” “She’s kind of sexy,” the acclaimed actress and singer said of losing her voice.

“Wicked: For Good” will be released in theaters on November 21st.
