Tom Hanks really loves the New York City subway, so much so that he wrote a song about it.
The actor belted out a self-penned song praising 7 Train on Tuesday night at a gala celebration for the non-profit cultural center, The Shed.
“Words cannot express how wonderful it is to be in The Shed every day,” he said in his speech. “Why? Officially, this is the last stop of train No. 7.”
The Oscar winner then snapped his fingers and sang, “The cabin is on the Hudson Yards on the Lower West Side, off the High Line. Yes, the cabin is on the Lower West Side, off the High Line at Hudson Yards!”
The Toy Story star, 69, continued singing the same refrain as director Kenny Leon, who was also on stage, quickly increased the tempo.
The “Forrest Gump” actor is right. The 7 train is conveniently located next to The Shed, which stars in This World of Tomorrow.
He co-wrote and stars in a play about a disillusioned scientist from the future who travels in time to the 1939 World’s Fair.
The play is based on a short story he wrote and will be directed by Leon.
Hanks also spoke passionately about Leon during his speech at Tuesday’s event.
“Kenny Leon came to direct ‘This World of Tomorrow,’ so there’s proof that God exists,” he said.
The actor further added, “I can’t tell you the blessings we’ve been given because of his guidance, his uncompromising. Well, let’s just call it mom. How about that? Can I say that in The Shed?”
Hanks explained that he had to go home to prepare for the performance, and joked that the cast, including Kerry O’Hara, are “so tired and drained on their days off.”
Meryl Streep, Martin Short, Katie Holmes and Steve Martin were in the audience, as well as Hanks’ wife Rita Wilson and son Chet Hanks.
The starry night honored retired ballerina Misty Copeland, New York City Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch and former Coach CEO Lou Frankfort.
Hanks made headlines last month when he was photographed riding the Route 6 incognito.
He was also seen wearing a mask to hide his face.
