Variety reports that “Twisted Metal” has been renewed for a third season on Peacock.
Additionally, series co-creator Michael Jonathan Smith, who served as showrunner for the first two seasons, is also leaving the show. David Reid will join the series as showrunner and executive producer for Season 3 under an overall deal with Sony Pictures Television.
“Twisted Metal” Season 2 debuted on Peacock in July. The series stars Anthony Mackie, Stephanie Beatriz, Joe Senoa, and Will Arnett. Season 2 has garnered 993 million minutes of viewing to date, making it Peacock’s second-highest original scripted season, according to NBCUniversal.
The series is based on the PlayStation game franchise of the same name. The official description for Season 2 reads:
“Following a revelation in the season 1 finale, John (Mackie) and Quiet (Beatrice) find themselves participating in the Deadly Twisted Metal Tournament, an evil destruction derby hosted by a mysterious man known as Calypso (Anthony Carrigan). He They try to survive an onslaught of dangerous new enemies and familiar faces, including the murderous clown Sweet Tooth (played by Senoa, voiced by Arnett), and things get complicated when John reunites with his estranged sister, the vigilante Dollface (Tiana Okoye).
Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick will also co-create the show and serve as executive producers alongside Reed. Arnett and Mark Forman will serve as executive producers through Electric Ave, Mackie through Make It Gravy Productions, Jason Spire of Inspire Entertainment, Peter Principato of Artists First, Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan of PlayStation Productions, and Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s studio operations. The series is produced by Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Universal Television.
Reed’s recent credits include Amazon’s hit series “The Boys” and the Paramount+ series “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.” Additionally, he has written scripts for shows such as “The Magicians,” “Supernatural,” and “Aquarius,” as well as sold pilots to BBC Worldwide, CBS, Tomorrow Studios, and FX. He has also written novels, comic books, and video games throughout his career.
