On this week’s episode of “Saturday Night Live,” Commander-in-Chief James Austin Johnson brags from the Oval Office about the government shutdown that has been in place since Oct. 1, as he spoke directly to President Trump in the cold.
“The Supreme Court said we can stop feeding the poor, and you can clap for that. Snap!” Trump said. “For people who can afford to buy food — no, they can’t. We promised that food prices would plummet, and they did. Prices plummeted. People say, ‘But how are you going to buy your family a turkey for Thanksgiving? Well, the good news is, your family isn’t coming because all the planes have flown.'”
The cold open referenced Friday’s Supreme Court ruling that allowed the Trump administration to continue paying reduced food stamp benefits.
“The government is still shut down anyway, all because of Democrats and some Republicans and all Republicans and me,” Trump continued. “We’re going to keep the government shut down. We’re probably going to investigate Stealing Christmas. We’re going to do the Grinch. I like the Grinch. He’s a great guy.”
The sketch also began with a reenactment of Thursday’s incident in which a guest in the Oval Office collapsed during President Trump’s announcement of a weight-loss drug cost-cutting program.
“I wasn’t there. Someone died in my office,” Trump said. “I think I’m acting this out quite normally, just standing there and staring like a sociopath.”
The November 8 episode of “Saturday Night Live” was hosted by Nikki Glazer and featured musical guest Sombre.
