Demi Moore said she was “embarrassed” that her A Few Good Men co-star Tom Cruise was heavily pregnant while filming the 1992 courtroom drama.
During a Q&A at the New Yorker Festival on Saturday, she revealed that she was almost eight months pregnant with daughter Scout, now 34, when she first exchanged lines with Cruise and director Rob Reiner before filming.
“I think Tom was pretty embarrassed,” Moore said, People magazine reported. “Actually, I felt okay about it. But I was moving around, right? But I could tell he felt it was a little awkward.”
The Substance star, 62, reflected that Cruise, 63, also felt uncomfortable because few actresses had children at the time, due to the pressure of having to choose between motherhood and a career.
“This is one of the many things that didn’t make sense to me,” she said of the choices women face. “So I challenged that to say, ‘Why not? Why can’t we have both?'”
“But at the same time, I think there’s been a lot of pressure on myself to prove that it’s possible, in a way,” she continued.
Moore said she had a particularly hard time getting in shape for the film, in which she played a Navy Interior Department lawyer, and started working out even before giving birth to Scout.
“I probably had too many expectations because I was going to wear a military uniform, so I started training and trying to get in shape even before she was born,” Moore said.
“The day my water broke, I went on a two-and-a-half hour hike, biked 44 miles, and then danced at a reggae club. That’s why she came two-and-a-half weeks early,” she continued.
Representatives for Cruise did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.
Moore has three daughters, Scout, Rumer, 37, and Talulah, 31, with her ex-husband Bruce Willis.
She famously posed nude for the August 1991 Vanity Fair cover while seven months pregnant with Scout, who was born in July 1991, and was photographed by photographer Annie Leibovitz.
The actress has been candid about dealing with body insecurities over the years, including her iconic bikini scene in Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle.
“All I remember is begging them not to shoot me in the butt. I don’t know why that stuck with me,” she told Drew Barrymore in May on his talk show, with whom she co-starred in the 2003 film.
Moore filmed this scene when he was 40 years old and attracted a lot of attention for his toned physique.
She admitted on the scene that she was “unprepared for the attention that happened,” adding, “Ironically, I didn’t know it was particularly related to my age.”
