Sony’s R-rated animated film “Chainsaw Man” surpassed Disney and 20th Century Studios’ musical biopic “Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere” at the box office in Thursday previews.

“Chainsaw Man: The Movie: Red Edition” grossed $3.4 million at preview screenings. It is expected to lead the pack of newcomers at the box office with $11 million to $15 million, but it now looks like it could even surpass that. It could surpass last week’s box office champion, Universal and Blumhouse’s horror film “Black Phone 2,” which is expected to gross between $10 million and $12 million in its second week of release.

Sony has already had great success with its other anime project, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba: Infinity Castle, which had a hefty opening price of $70 million last month. “Demon Slayer,” which was also brought to the big screen and based on an existing animated television series, grossed $131 million domestically and $659 million worldwide. Now, Chainsaw Man could be Sony’s second consecutive anime success.

Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere stars Jeremy Allen White, who won an Emmy for his role in The Bear, as Bruce Springsteen, who produces his 1982 album Nebraska. It earned $850,000 in Thursday previews. Opening revenue is estimated to be between $8 million and $12 million, with a budget of $55 million.

The third new release this week is Paramount’s adaptation of author Colleen Hoover’s novel “Regretting You,” starring Allison Williams, Mckenna Grace, Dave Franco, and Mason Thames. It is expected to gross between $8 million and $10 million this weekend. The PG-13 film about a mother and daughter facing a devastating accident cost just $30 million to make.
