Strictly Come Dancing hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman have announced they are leaving the BBC series.
In a video posted to their Instagram accounts, the two revealed that they had made a joint decision to leave the show. “There have been some rumors, but we want you to hear this,” Winkleman began. “After 21 wonderful and enjoyable years on Strictly, we have decided that the time is right to step back and pass the baton,” Daly continued.
Daly has hosted the dance competition series since its inception in 2004, but Winkleman joined as co-host in 2014 when Sir Bruce Forsyth left the show.
“We love working as a duo and hosting ‘Strictly’ was an absolute dream. We always intended to leave together but now feels like the right time,” they continued in the video’s caption. “We have the best remaining days of this amazing series and I would like to say a huge thank you to the BBC and everyone involved in the show. They are the most amazing team and we miss them every day. We will cry when we say ‘keep dancing’ at the end, but we will keep saying it to each other. We may be at home wearing our jerseys and holding pizzas.”
Daly added to his statement on Instagram: “This isn’t saying goodbye to glitter, sequins and Saturday night sparkle (I couldn’t say goodbye to them!). ‘Strictly’ will forever hold a special place in my heart, but it feels like the right time to take over the reins.”
The 23rd season of Strictly Come Dancing is currently airing on the BBC, with the final episode set for December 20th. Daly and Winkleman will continue to host the show until the end of the season, after which the BBC will search for a new host.
In another post, Winkleman added: “I’ve always believed it’s best to leave a party before you’re completely ready. And I know the new hosts will be great. I’m looking forward to watching them take ‘Strictly’ to new heights.” “As for Tess, I’m so lucky to be standing next to you. You’re funny, kind, smart, and a true friend. I love you.”
