A sailor’s worst nightmare has returned for more bloodshed.
A sequel to “Screamboat,” the comedy-horror movie about Steamboat Willie, is in the works, the director of the original film has announced. Screamboat, released earlier this year, comes at a time when Disney’s Mickey Mouse predecessor will enter the public domain in 2024.
Director Stephen Lamothe said in a statement: “I’m thrilled to announce the sequel to this bloody horror comedy.” “We’ve had so much fun bringing these iconic characters to life with a bloody twist, and we’re looking forward to returning to the world of Screamboat and creating even more miniature murder and mayhem.”
LaMorte first teased the new chapter in his acceptance speech on Oct. 19, when “Screamboat” was named Best Public Domain Resurrection at the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards.
The sequel is expected to begin development in 2026. Most of the cast is expected to continue, but no official announcement has been made.
One notable addition: As foretold at the end of the previous film, Steamboat Willie’s lover will be joining the mix. The sequel “continues the story and expands on the first film’s shocking cliffhanger ending, which heralded the arrival of another murderous public domain icon, Minnie,” the filmmakers tease in a press release. “Fans can expect the sequel to further build on that legacy with even more outrageous sets and gruesome comedy.”
The original film was produced by Amy Schumacher, Martine Mereur, Steven Della Sala, and Michael Levy. Creature effects are provided by Christian Beckman’s Quantum Creation FX, Inc. and designed by Christian Cordella.
